INCC News September 2019

The wattle is out, the days are longer, dust off the boat, it’s Spring!  And for those hardly paddlers who haven’t been in winter hiatus, it’s time to enjoy longer days and warmer temperatures.

Fairfield challenging INCC for Club Championship

The Marathon Winter Series points currently stand at INCC, Yarra Paddlers 3492, Fairfield 3278.  We only hold a slight lead and Fairfield is sending a big contingent to the Wodonga race.  So we need you all to paddle at  WS7 Echuca Mini if we are to retain the trophy in 2019.

Clubhouse Development

The scoping committee has met several times and good progress is being made on progressing our new shed storage facility.  We will keep you in touch as plans develop.

Avon

Our racing stalwarts John Young and Dom Scarff recently competed in the challenging Avon Descent, a two-day 124km adventure river race from Northam to Bayswater Perth.  Both raced in the Single Open Ski category. Dom had a great race, given he was a first time Avon paddler, finishing 2nd place.  John had an exciting race finishing 17th.  We will all have an opportunity to hear their stories at our AGM on the 8th November.

Nagambie

Many hardy souls took to Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn for the relocated Marathon Winter series #5.  Strong winds provided a challenge to paddlers as they exited the lake, resulting in many capsizes (six for me!). The river proved to be more sheltered and despite the conditions it was a fun day out.  Thanks to John Young and his Marathon team for having the agility to move the race at such short notice. Thanks also to our paddlers for representing the club so capably.

Once again INCC is hosting two Come & Try days in late spring for members of the public to try out paddling.

Please tell all your friends and family. This is a great opportunity for them to try out kayaking to see if they like it and to experience our beautiful Yarra from on the river.

  • Suitable for all adults and children 12 and over and for all levels of fitness.
  • We provide qualified kayaking coaches to help you get started
  • All equipment provided by INCC including personal floatation devices.
  • You must be able to swim 50 metres and be confident in water to participate.
  • Coaches all have First Aid qualifications.
  • Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

What to wear and bring
Wear shorts, t-shirt (or thermals if it’s a bit cold), reef shoes if they have them, and sunscreen.

No RSVP required, they just turn up on the day.

A few reminders;

  • It is the law for every paddler to wear a PFD whilst on the river.
  • If you are paddling in the dark you will also need the appropriate lights on your boat
  • If you wish to utilise the club trailer, please request permission from our Boat Captain, Rob Godwin. There is a procedure to be followed to ensure safe movement of the trailer to prevent accident or injury.

We are always interested to hear about your adventures, whether it’s a fun recreational paddle or your first race, so please let us know and we can highlight them to all our members.
