INCC Yarra Paddlers has had a popular junior program for many years. In 2021 we are offering separate programs for primary and secondary school-age children. Both programs run on Saturday afternoons during school terms from our clubhouse in Fairfield Park. Participants develop flatwater paddling skills and have the opportunity to try sprint and marathon disciplines.
Our program for primary school-aged children, the Paddleroos, will start at noon and finish at 2 pm. The emphasis is on having fun while learning how to paddle, develop strength and fitness, and confidence on the water.
The Junior Squad aims to support the development of young paddlers at secondary school, including those who want to compete. The program offers participants up to 3 sessions per week. The main session runs on Saturdays between 2 and 4pm, with a second session on Wednesday at 4.15 to 5.15pm and a third session on Mondays at the same time. Participants must make their own way to and from Fairfield Park.
Our junior programs are led by qualified and experienced kayaking coaches with first-aid and CPR certificates, all of whom have current Working with Children checks. The sessions are conducted under recommended paddler/coach ratios.
We are planning for the groups to attend at least one Paddle Victoria event each term. These events are on Saturdays or Sundays and held on different waterways around Melbourne. Parents are encouraged to come along to support the group, although the club can assist with transport if needed.
Fees include junior club membership of INCC Yarra Paddlers and registration with Paddle Victoria.
